Have problems? Throw A PIE at it...
Have problems? Throw A PIE at them Our society is fond of acronyms; and one of my favorites is actually a very useful way to solve problems. Anybody, whether in business or school, or just being a normal human being, will find him or herself challenged by situations with the possibility of multiple solutions. “A PIE” is a simple problem solving formula that is easy to remember, and will get you going in no time. “A” stands for Analyze. My father told me that if I “look at a problem long enough, the solution will become obvious”. So the first thing that we need to do, when confronted with overwhelming odds, is to tear down the situation until we find the real cause of the problem. Usually, it is something simple, easy to solve. But we need to be willing to find the root cause. Sometimes, the problems at home is not that my wife does not love me, or that our kids hate us, is just that we have not learned to speak the same language, go figure. And sometimes, it is not that we need more Search Engine Optimization (SEO), as it is that we need more individual recognition. “P” stands for Plan. It is time to come up with several courses of action. This time is just a brainstorming session; if it might solve the situation, write it down. Split the situation in chunks or pieces, and come up with as many solutions as possible. Then, write down the pros and the cons of every one of the proposed solutions that we found during the brainstorming session. Find the three most plausible, the two, and last the most plausible of the possible courses of action. ¨I¨ stands for Implement. Pick the most plausible solution and put it into action. ¨E¨ stands for Evaluate. Stand back and check out your handy work. Is it going the way you planned, or do you need to adjust fire? Do not be afraid of minor adjustments. It is those minor adjustments that will take to you the desired outcome. So there you have it, next time you find an unexpected situation, throw A PIE to it. It is not only practical, but also delicious.
